Intercontinental Cup: Sunil Chhetri Guides Team India To Finals In His 100th Game As India Beat Kenya

Indian team registered another win against Kenya 3-0 in the Intercontinental Cup at the Football Arena in Mumbai on Monday ruling on the top of the points table.

The furious outpour of rain lead to difficulties for both the teams to adjust on the wet surface in the opening minutes. It was a tight contest as both the teams were not able to find the nets till the halftime after which, a penalty strike by the skipper in the 68th minute which added extra time following which 71st-minute strike by Jeje Lalpekhula enabled India to outplay Kenya in a tough contest.

Coach Stephen Constantine said, “I want to congratulate the boys for the hard-fought victory under difficult conditions. We didn’t play well in the first half. The win puts us in the final of the tournament and that’s what we wanted to achieve since the beginning.”


The match was special for the Indian team as the skipper Chhetri was playing his 100th match and because of the plea from Sunil Chhetri a few days back.

The profound appeal from the captain to support the Indian football team in the stadium worked: the Mumbai arena was sold out and the fans applauded each moment in the stadium, even the outrageous rain could not affect the atmosphere of the stadium.

Chhetri thanked the fans on twitter and said “we promise that if that’s the kind of support we get every time we play for the country we will give our lives on the Pitch. Those in stands shouting, and the ones at home cheering- thank you!
