New Zealand thrashed India by 80 runs in the first T20I at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington as they bundled out the Indian team for just 139 runs in 19.2 overs.

Tim Seifert became the Man of the match for his explosive innings of 84 runs in 43 balls with 6 sixes and 7 fours.

After winning the toss Indian team opted to bowl first and failed to take early wickets which cost them a huge target of 220 runs.

Asked to chase 220 runs by New Zealand, Indian middle order collapsed miserably from 51/132 to 77/6 in five overs and eventually 139 runs to throw away momentum created by Shikhar Dhawan and Vijay Shankar at the top.

Dhawan and Shankar 33 run stands for the second wicket was undone with the middle order failing to strike miserably.

In the absence of skipper Virat Kohli, none of the Indian batsmen remained steady under rising run rate and pressure.

MS Dhoni again played a sensible inning of 39 runs in 31 balls. After the disappointing performance of captain Rohit Sharma and quick fall of the middle order, Dhoni took the responsibility and saved his team from a humiliating defeat.

Southee sent Rohit back to the pavilion in 3rd over. Vijay came to bat at number three which was strange for many of the Indian fans. Dhawan scored 29 runs in 18 balls with 3 sixes.

He was given strong support at the other end by youngster Vijay Shankar who scored 27 runs from 18 balls with 2 sixes to his name.
