India secured a 2-1 win against the Olympic champions Argentina in Champions Trophy match on Sunday. India scored both their goals in the second quarter through Harmanpreet Singh in the 17th minute, who converted a penalty corner, and the second strike was done by Mandeep Singh in the 28th minute.

Argentina scored their only goal in the 30th minute through a set piece. Gonzalo Peillat was the Argentine player who converted the set piece into a goal.

After Saturday’s 4-0 win over Pakistan, coach Harendra Singh while addressing the media had said, “With due respect, the tournament begins with the match against Argentina. It is a truism in the world of hockey that the big teams are Argentina, Holland, Belgium and Australia with three of the four teams in India's group.”

Ramandeep Singh’s injury had caused a trouble in the team formation and when Lalit Upadhyay played as the lone ranger up-front backed by a phalanx of four attacking midfielders, including Sardar Singh, Harendra was listening to his instincts.

Argentina did the initial press. They used the flanks to stretch the Indian defence. However, Birendra Lakra, Harmanpreet, Surender and Varun Kumar stood firm.

Earlier on Saturday, the Indian team in the conquest to win the tournament smashed rivals Pakistan 4-0 in the opening match of the tournament.
