India Stuns Italy To Qualify For The Quater-Finals Of The Women's Hockey World Cup

The Indian hockey team progressed to the quarter-finals with a dominating 3-0 win over the Italian squad on Tuesday at the Women's Hockey World Cup 2018, in London.

This was the first time that the two nations India and Italy faced each other in a World Cup fixture. This was also India's 9th win in 16 encounters vs Italy.

India made a positive start to the game, looking to keep possession and generally not taking any extra risks in the first few minutes.

Lalremsiami scored the opening goal for India in the 9th minute of the match. India continued their momentum in an aggressive manner, but failed to score any goal in the 2nd quarter and went into half-time with their lead intact.

In the 3rd quarter, Indian team looked determined to extend their lead and finally earned a penalty corner which was converted into a goal with a brilliant deflection from Neha Goyal.

With just 5 minutes to go in the final quarter, Vandana Katariya too scored a goal with a deflection for India making it impossible for Italy to level the scores.

Finally, a whistle from the referee and it was all over for Italy. Indian team qualified for the quarter-final for the first time in 40 years.

India will now lock horns with Ireland on Thursday who had defeated them in the group stages of the tournament.
