Many of Haryana’s Commonwealth Games 2018 Medallists have decided to boycott a ceremony organised by the Haryana government in Panchkula on April 26.

The athletes are protesting against a move by the Haryana government that could potentially reduce award money to CWG medallists. Neeraj Chopra, Manoj Kumar, Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik are some of the big names who have taken this stand.

Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra reportedly said, “If senior players feel injustice is being done, then I will follow them. They are senior and are taking the right decision (to boycott the ceremony).”

According to Haryana’s sports policy, a CWG Gold Medallist will get Rs 1.5 crore, a silver medallist Rs 75 lakh and a bronze medallist Rs 50 lakhfrom the state. But, if the athletes represent other institutions such as The Army or The Railway and are given cash prices by them, the Haryana government will deduct that from the original amount and give the rest.

For eg, if an athlete has won a gold medal he/she will be given Rs 1.5 crore from the state, but if he/she also represents The Army and has been awarded Rs 50 lakh, the amount Haryana government will award them with is Rs 1 crore.

Athletes from Haryana won 22 of the 66 medals at CWG 2018.
