Garbine Muguruza made Maria Sharapova face her worst Grand Slam defeat in the French Open quarter-final on Wednesday. The 24-year-old will play the semifinals against Simona Halep on Thursday.

The Spanish third seed and the 2016 Grand Slam title winner dominated from the start and ended the Russian’s hope with a 6-2, 6-1 win in just 70 minutes. After blasting the game with her shots Muguruza said, “When you win against an old-time player with a lot of experience it gives you a lot of confidence. These matches are the way you need to travel to get to the end of the tournament.”

Muguruza’s aggressive game at the Phillippe-Chatlier court on Wednesday forced the Russian to go for more on her serves resulting in errors. Three double faults from Sharapova gave an early advantage to Muguruza the six-deuce of an 11-minute third game helping Spaniard go 3-0 ahead.

Maria Sharapova had not played for four days after Williams pulled out last-16-match, whereas Muguruza match was pulled out by her opponent Lesia out of her hip problem after 20 minutes. But lack of court time affected Maria Sharapova more than the Wimbledon champion.

Muguruza has never lost any match at Roland Garros.

Three previous matches of the Wimbledon champion against Sharapova ended in defeat. These matches include a 2014 Roland Garros quarter-final. Both Muguruza and Halep haven’t won Grand Slam title.
