French Open: Injured Serena Williams Pulls Out Of Crucial Match Vs Maria Sharapova

Serena Williams stunned the French Open yesterday by withdrawing from her eagerly awaited match against rival Maria Sharapova. The announcement was made just minutes before the match that was about to start on Court Philippe Chatrier.

The 36-year-old said she had suffered a pectoral muscle injury in the third round of the match won over Julia Goerges. She further said that she could not serve at all.

The 23-time grand slam champion said “I am beyond disappointed. I gave up so much time with my daughter and time with my family all for this moment. So it’s really difficult to be in this Situation.”

“It’s very difficult”, Williams added. “I love playing Maria. But also, I made a promise to myself and my coach and my team that if I’m not at least 60% or 50% fit then I probably shouldn’t play.”

Videos showed that Williams was facing difficulties carrying her bag off the court after the match on Sunday.

According to reports, Serena would undergo an MRI on Tuesday. 

Sharapova also wished her speedy Recovery. She said, “ I wish for her speedy recovery and I hope she returns to the tour soon.”

For now, Williams is out of the French Open and Maria Sharapova has made to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
