| June 17 , 2018 , 13:12 IST

Denmark spoiled Peru’s first game in 36 years by defeating them by 1-0 in the group C opener on Saturday. The match was played in Saransk Stadium.

Peruvians were awarded a penalty by the referee after a pitchside review, Cueva stepped up but ended up hitting the ball just over the frame whereas Denmark looked settled in the game and the Danish striker Poulsen scored a goal in the 59th minute of the game.

Peruvians looked good in the game. The team came close to the goal post many times and had many chances in the last 30 minutes. Peru veteran Paolo Guerrero, who only made it to the tournament after late reprieve for a drug ban, came on for the final 30 minutes but his efforts at the Mordovia Arena came to no avail.

The defence and goalkeeper of Denmark’s team Schmeichel performed splendidly, he made six saves. Kasper Schmeichel denied Jefferson Farfan brilliantly with six minutes to go.

Poulsen was awarded Budweiser man of the match.

Peru will face France in the next game, whereas Denmark will go against Australia in their next match.
