Indian weightlifting team has begun their Commonwealth Games 2018 campaign in a blistering fashion, as female weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won country’s first Gold medal at Gold Coast on Thursday.

Hailing from Manipur, Chanu set a new Commonwealth record and personal best for herself with an 86 kg lift in 'snatch', and 110 kgs in ‘clean and jerk’ rounds, Chanu was at her terrific best at Gold Coast in Australia. Having won the World Championship in November 2017, she was one of the favourites to win this event and bring home a gold medal.

While Gururaja Poojary of India already won silver in men’s 56 kg category, it is Mirabai Chanu’s gold-winning performance that has left the country buzzing with joy.

These feats by the Indian weightlifting contingent is even more impressive given their recent peril of not having a physio and a masseur among their ranks at the Games Village.

Their accreditation was reportedly cancelled for some reason and the team, who is one of the few where India can win medals in almost all of the events is fighting with limited resources.
