Wigan Athletic emulated the magic of FA Cup 2013 final, as they showcased an inspired display to defeat 10-men Manchester City in the 5th round on Monday.

Will Grigg scored the goal with this being his seventh in this season’s competition, more than any other player, and ended City’s hopes of an unprecedented league and cup quadruple.

What was expected to be a domination by the Premier League leaders Manchester City as they travelled to an unlikely Achilles heel in third tier Wigan Athletic, logic was defied. DW Stadium was packed to see their team give best and put on a fight against incoming giants.

With the first-half seeming to end goalless, an unnecessary and extreme tackle by Fabian Delph saw him get marching orders with the referee showing him the red card. Even though City dominated the possession stat, with a man down their shape looked incomplete and suspect of defensive frailties.

In the 79th minute, it was duly exposed as a misplaced ball was latched onto by Will Griggs who ran at the defence of City before curling one past the keeper and into the back of the net. A euphoric roar was ricocheting within the stadium as the improbable had happened.

In the end, Manchester City dominated every stat from having 84% possession to having 11 shots as well as winning 15 corners. But, Wigan Athletic had the one all-important stat up their sleeves, and it’s the only one that matters.

They now face Southampton in Quarter-Finals of the FA Cup in March.
