India took a steady start on the opening day of India Vs Sri Lanka Tests series at Galle on Wednesday.

Running down the field, opener Dhawan took the reins in his hands as he continued his binge until he went down as he approached closing a double century. Dhawan delivered a stunning 190 off 168 balls with the help of 31 boundaries.

He kept fending for the team even as the runner up Abhinav Mukund went back to the pavilion just after playing 26 balls.

Nuwan Pradeep bagged the only wicket for Sri Lanka as Indian opener Abhinav Mukund. He fell victim to a poor shot selection when he dabbed at a delivery outside the off-stump only to see wicket-keeper Niroshan Dickwella latch onto the outside edge.

Cheteshwar Pujara had joined Dhawan on the field and supported his stranded score. Pujara withheld his ground scoring a stunning 75 off 135 balls.

Electing to bat on winning the toss, the visitors were off to a steady start with Dhawan and Mukund handling the Lankan pacers quite comfortably.

The Indian openers were a bit cautious in the opening two overs before Dhawan brought up the first boundary of the innings with a straight drive off pacer Nuwan Pradeep.

The Lankan Pacers were unable to trouble the Indians, who continued to bat comfortably, hitting the occasional boundary.

Although he hit two boundaries off pacer Lahiru Kumara, Mukund was struggling a bit during his 26-ball stay in the middle. But the left-hander virtually gifted his wicket to Pradeep when he decided to go after a ball which moved away slightly after pitching.

Dhawan however, displayed an excellent form on the other side of the pitch until Nuwan Pradeep swept his wicket as well.
