CWG 2018: Female Weightlifter Sanjita Chanu Wins India’s Second Gold Medal

India won their second gold medal at Commonwealth Games 2018 through another weightlifter, Sanjita Chanu. She clinched the top spot of the podium in the 53kg weight category on Friday at Gold Coast.

Sanjita was not only disappointed that she didn’t break the CWG record, but was also not her 100 percent fit while competing in the competition.

The 24-year-old Manipuri also claimed the 2014 Glasgow Games gold in 48kgs. She won at the Gold Coast Games after breaking the Games record in snatch — her total was 192 kgs (84 kgs+108 kgs).

"Had I not dropped my last lift, I would have created a Games record. I really wanted to do it. I missed it and I am a bit sad about that. But I guess it's ok," said the reigning Commonwealth Championships gold-medallist.

"I had come thinking of breaking the record and lift 112 kgs (the CWG record stands at 111 kgs), I thought it was not that difficult. Probably God was not with me today.

"I became a little stiff during my clean lift and I probably didn't push too well in jerk," she reasoned.

This takes India's tally to four medals as on Thursday, Gururaja won a silver medal in men’s 56kg weightlifting event while Deepak Lather settled for a bronze medal in 69kg Weightlifting category on Friday.
