India's Gururaja went on to win the first medal for India in Commonwealth Games 2018 on Thursday. He got a silver medal in men's 56-kilogram weightlifting event. He performed his best in the snatch, weighing 111 kilograms. After this, the 28-year-old player lifted 138 kilograms in clean and jerk.

Overall Gururaja took 249 kilograms of total weight, achieving his personal best.
Muhammad Izhar Ahmad of Malaysia won a gold with a total lift of 261 kilograms which is a record of Commonwealth Games, while Sri Lanka's Chaturanga Lakmal lifted 248 kilograms and attained a Bronze Medal.

In the Commonwealth Championships in Australia in 2017, Gururaja had won the Bronze Medal.
Gururaja started weightlifting in 2010, a total of 8 years ago. He had won gold by lifting his 249 kg (108 + 141) weight in the Commonwealth Senior Weightlifting Championship in Penang in 2016.

Earlier this year, Gururaja won the gold medal in the South Asian Games. The son of a truck driver, Gururaja is a resident of Kundapura in Karnataka. Apart from weightlifting, Gururaja is also adept in powerlifting.
