Ballon d’Or Award 2018: 30 Players Shortlisted For The Prestigious Award

The nominations for the prestigious Ballon d'Or award was released on Monday night and 30-man were shortlisted.

Barcelona's Argentine star, Lionel Messi, Paris Saint-Germain's Brazilian forward Neymar and Real Madrid's Croatian midfielder Luka Modric have been nominated by France Football magazine.

A total of 11 players from the Premier League have made it to the list, including the likes of Mohamed Salah, Kevin de Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Harry Kane. Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo is the current holder of the title and would be up against Barcelona captain Lionel Messi once again in a bid the leave the Argentine behind in the tally by claiming his 6th Ballon d'Or trophy. Presently, Messi and Ronaldo hold the top spot jointly with 5 such Golden Balls each to their name.

The provisional list, issued on Monday night, also included Atletico Madrid's Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak, Manchester United's Paul Pogba of France, Real Madrid defender Marcelo, PSG's French forward Kylian Mbappe, Tottenham Hotspur's French keeper Hugo Lloris, Juventus' Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic and Liverpool's Senegalese forward Sadio Mane.

It is learnt that the award started first in the year 1956 when former England international Sir Stanley Matthews being the first ever winner. The voting for the best player is done by journalists across the globe (one from each country) before the compilation is done to reveal the eventual winner. Until 2016, the award was being given as FIFA Ballon d'Or but the two split two years ago and since then two separate awards are being given.
