Football: Alan Shearer Applauds England’s FIFA U-17 World Cup Heroes

The former England and Newcastle United player, Alan Shearer was in full praise for England’s FIFA U-17 World Cup winning team. He called the victory a remarkable achievement for the English Football.  Speaking with news agencies, Shearer said, “A title for the U-17 boys in India is great for English football.”

England has been crowned the champions of the tournament beating Spain 5-2 in the final. Notably, England’s senior Football team has been miserable in the past two or three FIFA tournaments.  The recent win by the junior team shows the positive signs for the English future.

In the current year, the Three Lions have won FIFA U-20 World Cup title, a UEFA European U-19 Championship and FIFA U-17 World Cup. “The U-20 team did a fantastic job earlier in the summer in Korea when they won the first FIFA U-20 World Cup, and a title for the U-17 boys in India is great for English football.”

FIFA U-17 World Cup in India was historic in many ways. The tournament has made a history of highest attendance in any FIFA U-17 World Cup, the record previously held by China.  The highest Premier League goalscorer also praised Indian Football and hinted that the tournament will help the sport to develop further in the country.

India’s performance

The event saw India’s debut in the FIFA World Cup tournament. The host nation played the first match against the USA followed by Columbia and Ghana. Overall team has conceded nine goals and scored one against Columbia. Though, the team failed to win a single match but showed the signs of improvement. The tournament showed the weaker and stronger side of Indian Football.

What’s next?

Senior Indian Football team recently qualified for the AFC Asia Cup, which will be played out in 2019. The team will have the opportunity to face stronger sides like South Korea, Iran, Japan, and Australia.
