The aggressive Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan has been suspended for 5 months after failing a dope test on Tuesday. The all-rounder has reportedly gulped in a prohibited substance that is generally present in cough syrups.

The BCCI stated, "Mr Pathan had provided a urine sample as part of the BCCI’s anti-doping testing program during a domestic T20 competition on March 16, 2017, in New Delhi. His sample was subsequently tested and found to contain Terbutaline."

The statement further explained, " Terbutaline, a specified substance, is prohibited both In & Out of Competition in the WADA Prohibited List of Substances."

Pathan only played one match for his team in Ranji Trophy this year before the Baroda's state association were asked by the BCCI to not pick Yusuf. The player was charged with the commission of an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) under the BCCI Anti-Doping Rules (ADR) Article 2.1 on October 27, 2017.

The player was charged but the provisional suspension was pending. A source has confirmed that Pathan has ingested a medicine named Brozeet containing Terbutaline as he was unwell but was unable to apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption.

The statement issued by the cricket board confirms, "The BCCI is satisfied with Mr Pathan’s explanation that he had taken Terbutaline inadvertently to treat an Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI) and not as a performance-enhancing drug."

"Having considered all of the evidence and taken expert external advice, the BCCI has accepted Mr Pathan’s explanation of the cause of his ADRV, and on that basis has agreed that a period of ineligibility of five months should apply, together with the disqualification of certain results."

The ban on Pathan might affect his stint in IPL, the 11th season of which will commence soon. Yusuf has played 57 ODIs and 22 T20 Internationals for the nation. His last international appearance was against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2012. He is a regular player of Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL since 2011.
