Yakub Memon Hanged; Security Of Three SC Judges Beefed Up

| July 29 , 2015 , 15:54 IST
Yakub Memon, 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts convict, was hanged to death just before 7 am at Nagpur Central Prison on Wednesday morning. This, after the Supreme Court opened its door in the middle of the night at 2 am to hear a fresh mercy petition on behalf of Memon in an an unprecedented move. Around 5 AM, Justice Deepak Misra, who headed the 3-judge bench, rejected the last-minute petition to stop Memon's hanging, saying Memon had "ample opportunity" to challenge his sentencing. The apex court bench comprising Justice Dipak Misra, Justice Prafulla C. Pant and Justice Amitava Roy post-midnight rejected Memon's plea seeking 14 days' time before the execution of his death sentence is carried out. Meanwhile, the security of the three judges has been beefed up following Yakub's execution. The court said that "the petitioner did not raise any question when earlier, the mercy petition by his brother was rejected by the president in 2014". Memon had challenged the rejection of his mercy petition by the president. His mercy petition was earlier rejected by the president on Wednesday, wherein, he raised fresh grounds for clemency -- commuting his death sentence to life imprisonment. The apex court bench, while rejecting Memon's latest plea, observed that there was nothing new in the new petition as it was a repetition of the same argument that was advanced on Wednesday. "Same thing was there in yesterday's (Wednesday) petition. There is nothing new in the new petition," said Justice Misra in the course of the hearing. LIVE UPDATES: Mumbai Police released a circular earlier in the day banning media coverage of the Yakub Memon funeral. “Hereby order released that no body will photograph or video graph during transportation of Yakub Memon’s corpse. Any person contravening the above order shall be prosecuted under section 188 of the IPC,” read the circular issued by the Commissioner of Police.
Additional Director General of Police (prisons) Meera Borwankar arrived from Pune to oversee the preparations at Nagpur jail. Desai had overseen the hanging of Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab at Yerwada jail in Pune during his stint there.
According to the jail manual, Memon will be woken up early in the morning. He will ne allowed to take a bath and will be offered some light refreshment. He would be given religious books to read or recite prayers. Later A team of doctors will examine Memon before the hanging. Chief Judicial Magistrate M M Deshpande is likely to be present and she will be reading out the operative part of the trial court's order to Memon.
According to the reports, Memon had not yet seen the 'Fansi Yard', where the hanging would take place. The hangman is supposed to pull the lever after a signal from the magistrate. The body should be kept hanging for half an hour, the manual says. The doctor will then check the body and declare him dead, and an autopsy would be conducted in the jail itself.
The court rejected Memon's plea for stay of execution and upheld the death warrant issued to Memon. He is scheduled to be hanged to death in Nagpur jail at 7am.
