When Narendra Modi was Chief Minister, Gujarat had imposed a complete ban on cow-slaughtering and any kind of transportation of cow beef, after amendment of Gujarat Animal Preservation Act (1954), which took place in 2011 and any crime against cows is covered under this Act. The Gujarat Animal Preservation Act of 1954 also says the punishment for transporting of cows will be 10 years in jail. In the current law, which was amended in 2011, the maximum jail term for cow slaughter was seven years. The new law also doubles penalty for the offence form Rs. 50,000.
