Cigarette, Paan Masala To Cost More In UP As Govt Raises VAT To 40%

Cigarette, Gutka and Pan Masala will cost more in Uttar Pradesh now as the state cabinet, during its meeting on Wednesday, decided to increase VAT on these products to 40 per cent. State government previously chargeed 25% VAT on cigarettes and 30% on paan masala. The cabinet also likely to propose ban on sale of lose cigarettes. Cabinet may also take up issue of procuring 500 more ambulances for operation under the "Dial 108" scheme.  According to TOI, The cabinet will also take up proposals to establish an artificial limb and rehabilitation center at Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University, 191 Model Schools for quality education in rural areas under public-private partnership (PPP) model, new police headquarters building and to develop educational institutes based on Ashram system on the pattern of Navodaya Vidyalayas.
