Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi's plans to visit his parliamentary constituency Amethi in UP from October 4-6 resulted in the state government requesting the Gandhi scion to reschedule his visit due to 'security issues' triggering a heavy backlash from the Congress.

Accused of barring Rahul Gandhi from visiting his own constituency, the Yogi Adityanath government clarified that it only asked the visit to be postponed as October 5 marks the culmination of Durga Puja/Dussehra and Muharram celebrations and sufficient security measures could not be provided to Gandhi.

"Through a letter (dated September 30), it was informed that a visit of MP Rahul Gandhi is proposed from October 4 to October 6. However, on October 5, Durga Puja/Dussehra and Muharram will culminate at several places, " said a letter from the Amethi administration to the district Congress chief.

"In order to maintain law-and-order, a majority of the district police force will be on duty. Hence, there will be a great inconvenience in maintaining peace. Therefore, it is requested that the tour be re-scheduled on any date after October 5," the letter continued.

Meanwhile, senior UP Congress leader Akhilesh Singh accused the state BJP government of 'using tactics' to prevent Gandhi from visiting Amethi.

"The Uttar Pradesh government is worried and does not want Rahul to visit Amethi, fearing that he might raise issues directly related to the public. This scares the BJP," senior Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Akhilesh Singh said.

Some sources also alleged that Gandhi's visit timing is being manipulated so that Amit Shah is able to visit Amethi first, as he is expected to visit the UP district in the second week of October.
