A Jodhpur court on Wednesday convicted self-styled 'godman' Asaram 'Bapu' in the rape case for which he had been in jail since 2013. Asaram was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment till death for the rape of a minor girl in 2013.

Asaram's aides Shilpi and Sharad who were also convicted on Wednesday have been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment each.

Due to security concerns, the sentence was pronounced from inside the Jodhpur Central Jail itself.

The 16-year-old girl accused Asaram of raping her after her parents were 'tricked' into taking her to his ashram near Jodhpur in 2013 allegedly so she could be 'exorcised from evil spirits'.

Ahead of the verdict considering massive following of Asaram who runs 400 ashrams across India, security has been boosted in Jodhpur, as well as other parts of Rajasthan and in Uttar Pradesh where the rape survivor lives. Security has also been boosted in Gujarat and Haryana which have large numbers of Asaram followers.

The chargesheet against 77-year-old Asaram accuses him of rape, trafficking and sexual crimes against children which could result in a minimum sentence of 10 years in jail to a maximum of life imprisonment if he is convicted.

The case has been mired in controversy as over the past 4 years of the trial against Asaram, 9 witnesses have been attacked and 3 have died.

Asaram's doctor Amrut Prajapat was shot dead in Gujarat in June 2014, and his cook Akhil Gupta along with another key witness were shot dead in 2015 in Uttar Pradesh. Two other key witnesses, Mahendra Chawala and Rahul Sachan, were attacked on the premises of the Jodhpur court in 2015 but survived and deposed against Asaram. The rape victim, however, was able to complete her court appearances safely.

Apart from the witnesses, police officers investigating the case were also reportedly threatened.

In similar circumstances last year, when another self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim, the chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, was convicted in a rape case, thousands of his followers went on rampage resulting in massive violence in Haryana and other northern states.
