Anguished villagers set the forest on fire in Harinagari area of Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar district on Monday evening after a leopard killed a seven-year-old boy.

RK Singh, divisional forest officer (DFO) Bageshwar said that victim Deepak son of Diwan Ram had gone to urinate outside the house on Monday evening when the leopard struck and dragged him towards the forest area. He said the boy’s mother was cooking at that time when she heard the cries of her son.

The half-eaten body of the boy was found near the forest.

Soon a huge crowd gathered in the village and demanded to shoot the leopard immediately and compensation for the family of the victim.

Angered by the incident, the villagers set the forest on fire; the officials couldn’t go into the affected area.

Singh said the family of the victim would be provided with the compensation of Rs 3 lakh. A meeting by wildlife department was held with chief wildlife warden to declare the leopard a man-eater and eliminate it.

This is the second incident in the same area in just span of three months which annoyed the villagers leading to the setting of forest on fire.

“The same leopard is suspected to have killed a four-year-old child in the area,” said Singh.
