Uttarakhand Assembly speaker Premchand Aggarwal's son Piyush Aggarwal on Monday resigned from the government job which was meant for ex-soldiers.

Preamchand Aggarwal told media persons that his son had tendered his resignation from the job.

He said, "I have had a long and unblemished political career and am being unnecessarily dragged into this controversy. My son is a qualified professional and had got the appointment in a temporary position for 11 months on his own merit. I had no role to play in this nor did I influence his appointment. However, since my name was being dragged in the matter for political reasons, my son decided to resign."

Piyush Aggarwal holds a B.Tech degree and was appointed as an assistant engineer through Uttarakhand Purva Sainik Kalyan Nigam Ltd (UPNAL), a welfare organisation meant for the ex-army men, their children and war widows.

As per reports Brigadier (retd) PPS Pahwa, managing director of UPNL while confirming the resignation said, "The candidate has voluntarily resigned and communicated the same through a letter dated April 7. UPNL has also cancelled his sponsorship."

Accepting that the appointment was a violation of rules, Pahwa added that UPNL has cancelled the sponsorship of two more candidates who had joined as assistant engineers at Jal Sansthan along with the speaker’s son.

Pahwa added, "We are now scrutinising all the appointments made after the government order dated July 5, 2016, which had stipulated that UPNL will only be facilitating recruitment of ex-servicemen and their kin."

The news that the assembly speaker's son had secured a job meant for ex-army personnel caused a storm in the political circles as the opposition Congress accused Aggarwal of exploiting his influence to facilitate the appointment.

Congress spokesperson Mathura Dutt Joshi said "It’s a shocking example of how rules are being bent to benefit those in powerful positions. Strict action should be taken against officials who facilitated the appointment."

Members of various unemployed unions had also threatened that they will conduct a protest against influential people grabbing jobs for their kin while lakhs of unemployed people in the state continued to suffer.
