Dust Storm Death Toll Reaches 109, Storm Conditions To Continue For 3 More Days

The death toll in the dust storm that swept through northern India on Wednesday night continued to increase throughout Thursday, reaching a total of 109 killed and more than 150 injured.

The National Weather Forecasting Centre of the India Meteorological Department in a release has predicted that thunderstorm conditions in India will continue till May 7, although different regions will be impacted on different days.

In Uttar Pradesh, 73 deaths were reported with 43 taking place in Agra alone, while in Rajasthan 36 deaths were reported with the worst affected districts including Alwar, Dholpur and Bharatpur.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje have both announced a compensation of Rs.4 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs.50,000 for each of the injured in their respective states.

The massive dust storm, which was accompanied by rain and lightning, resulted in the uprooting of trees, felling of electrical poles and damage to houses. The dust storm flattened mud houses during the night, which resulted in the increased death count as the residents were not able to flee from their homes. While the dust storm was felt in the Delhi NCR region as well, no damage was reported but 15 flights, including 2 international flights had to be diverted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences on the deaths.

"Saddened by the loss of lives due to dust storms in various parts of India. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Have asked officials to coordinate with the respective state governments and work towards assisting those who have been affected," PM Modi tweeted.

According to MET officials, more thunderstorms and strong winds are likely in UP over the next 2 days, especially in northern parts of the state.
