Since Yogi Adityanath became chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, the state's police has become infamous for its frequent 'encounters' and targeting of criminals. In a video that has gone viral on Sunday, a UP policeman resorts to verbally saying 'thain thain' mimicking the sounds of gun shots when his gun jams during an encounter.

According to reports, UP Police Sub-Inspector Manoj Kumar was in pursuit of 2 armed men in the Sambhal district of the state on Friday night when he found out that his pistol was jammed. He then resorted to mimicking the sound of gunfire by shouting 'thain thain' to frighten the criminals hiding in the sugarcane fields, and the video of him has since then gone viral.

Policemen in Sambhal's Asmauli area had signalled to 2 youths on a motorcycle to stop for surprise checking but the bikers opened fire at the police while trying to flee. One of the motorcyclists, identified as Rukhsad was held while the second youth slipped away into the dark and a combing operation was launched.

Superintendent of police Yamuna Prasad, quoted by Times of India said, “During this, the pistol of one of the SIs malfunctioned and he can be heard shouting ‘thain thain’ in the video," adding that he did so “in jest to support the ongoing operation after his pistol choked”.

Meanwhile, additional director general of police (law and order) Anand Kumar said that they would get an inspection of the weapon that malfunctioned.

“We will get the armourer to conduct a technical inspection of the weapon. The incident was an exception and even the best of shooters can sometimes run into such technical glitches,” said Kumar.
