Complaining about delays in government work is something everyone does. But, a senior UP Cabinet Minister, Om Prakash Rajbhar, faced with delays in repairs of a damaged road outside his house in Varanasi, literally picked up a spade and began the construction work himself on Saturday.

According to reports, the road outside the residence of Rajbhar, the head of the Suhaildev Bahujan Samaj Party (SBSP), in the Fatehpur Khonda village of Varanasi had been in bad shape for years. The minister made several requests to the concerned state government to get it repaired but to no avail.

As a result, the Backward Classes Welfare and Disabled People Development Minister Rajbhar, began constructing the road himself, and was soon joined by several supporters and villagers.

"Had requested for mending of the road 2.5 months ago, but found it in the same condition on the day of my son's wedding. So I picked up spade and people from society followed," Rajbhar said to media.

National General Secretary of the SBSP, Arun Rajbhar, said that the minister and his family had brought to the attention of the district administration and senior officials about the 'pitiable' condition of the road for the last 6 months but the "petitions had fallen on deaf ears".

"We were left with no option but to start working ourselves as there is very little time for the marriage reception," Arun Rajbhar said.

The marriage reception is expected to be attended by many VVIPs and dignitaries including BJP national president Amit Shah, state Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Organisational Secretary of the party Sunil Bansal and many state ministers.

For the past year, Rajbhar has been critical of the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh.
