A total of 3 men from Uttar Pradesh were brutally beaten up by a mob in a town near Tripura's capital Agartala on Thursday over suspicions that the trio were child lifters. One man, identified as Jahir Khan, who was a hawker from UP was killed on the spot while his two associates Gulzar and Khurshid Khan survived.

In the Murabari area of the West Tripura district around 30 km from the  state capital of Agartala, rumours spread that the 3 men from UP were child lifters and hundreds of people came out on the streets to 'punish' the men they believed were criminals.

Senior police officer Smriti Ranjan Das said that as the hawkers and the driver of their vehicle were being attacked, they ran into a small Tripura State Rifles camp. The security personnel fired two rounds in the air and 4 tear gas shells to disperse the crowd but could not hold back the mob.

"However, nearly a thousand agitated people chased them and entered the camp, and lynched one of the hawkers," Das to PTI.

Some of the police personnel also sustained injuries while trying to save the hawkers.

Tripura's top police officer AK Shukla later suspended text message and internet services in the area to prevent further rumour mongering.

Rumours of a child lifting gang involved in organ harvesting have been rampant in Tripura since an 11-year-old boy was found murdered in Western Tripura on Tuesday night.
