As the cold weather continues to grip northern India, the hardest hit by the weather conditions are the homeless.

A week after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered relief measures for the homeless and poor during the cold wave, he made a surprise check to a night shelter for the homeless near the Balrampur hospital in Lucknow on Wednesday night.

UP CM Yogi had asked all district magistrates to make proper arrangements for the poor in every district, by providing night shelters, free blankets and lighting up bonfires. He warned officials to avoid callousness and that officials should monitor relief measures in a sustained manner.

Yogi Adityanath has conducted surprise checks in the past as well, visiting a police station unannounced soon after he became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Over the past week a cold wave has covered large parts of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab and Haryana, affecting daily life. The accompanying fog has interfered with railways and airlines schedules as well. In Delhi on Thursday, 49 trains are delayed, 13 rescheduled and 12 cancelled due to prevailing fog conditions.
