Unexplored Himalayan Peak In Uttarakhand To Be Named After Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Adding on to the series of places to be named after former prime minister and BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee who passed away on August 16 at the age of 93 years, an unexplored Himalayan peak in Uttarakhand will also be named after him, State Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj said on Friday.

A team of mountaineers from Uttarkashi's Nehru Institute of Mountaineering will be embarking on an expedition to find the peak very soon, Maharaj said.

"We plan to name an unknown peak in the Himalayas after former prime minister Vajpayee. A team of mountaineers will soon start on an expedition in search of it," he said.

According to Maharaj, the idea to name a peak after Vajpayee came up in consideration of the former PM's love of nature and the mountains.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a 10-time member of the Lok Sabha and a 2-time member of the Rajya Sabha was the first Indian prime minister not belonging to the Congress party. Vajpayee was conferred with India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna in 2014 and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has also declared Vajpayee's birthday December 25 as Good Governance Day.

After the death of Vajpayee, several state governments, municipal corporations and leaders decided to rename several locations in their respective areas as a tribute to the great leader.

In Jharkhand, which was carved out of Bihar as an independent state in November 2000 when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the prime minister, several places and institutes are being renamed in his honour.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh had announced that the new capital of the state 'Naya Raipur' will be known as 'Atal Nagar' out of respect to Vajpayee.

In Haryana's Ambala city, its MLA Aseem Goel had announced that its upcoming planetarium to be constructed at the Bal Bhawan in the city will be name after Atal Bihari.  

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said that the archetype Sabarmati Ghat will be named after the former PM and will be known as 'Atal Ghat'.

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal rejected reports of the iconic Ramlila grounds being renamed in honour of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
