After a bitter battle for the AIADMK party and its election symbol, jailed VK Sasikala's nephew TTV Dhinakaran on Sunday confirmed that he would be launching a new political party on March 15 to “retrieve the AIADMK from the clutches of traitors.”

In a statement, Dhinakaran said, "With the blessings of Amma (former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa) and chinamma (V K Sasikala), the name of new party and flag will be unveiled at Melur in Madurai district on March 15. This follows a decision of the Delhi high court which allotted the pressure cooker symbol to us."

He added, “A political party is needed to retrieve the AIADMK from the clutches of traitors. We need a registered political party to fully retrieve the AIADMK from the present rulers. The party’s name and flag will be unveiled at 9am (on March 15) . Preparatory pujas were performed at in Melur on Sunday in the presence of several disqualified AIADMK MLAs."

Currently, Dhinakaran has at least 22 MLAs with him, including 18 disqualified by Speaker P Dhanapal based on the anti-defection law. He also recently booked the 'cooker' symbol for his new party.

On December 31st 2017, Tamil superstar Rajinikanth confirmed his political debut and that he would be launching a new political party. Rajinikanth added that for the next assembly elections in Tamil Nadu in 2021 he would be contesting all 234 seats.

Meanwhile, veteran actor Kamal Haasan on February 21 launched his own political party in Madurai named Makkal Needhi Maiam which in Tamil means ‘Centre for People’s justice’. Haasan said that the MNM would provide the people of Tamil Nadu a corruption-free government, and will have a centrist approach in terms of ideology.

Since the death of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in December 2016, there has been a perceived vacuum in the politics of the state.
