TTV Dhinakaran Claims Jayalalithaa's RK Nagar Seat

TTV Dhinakaran has claimed Amma's RK Nagar seat as per by-election results by more than 40,000 votes. The seat was earlier represented by the former Chief Minister of Chennai J Jayalalithaa. AIADMK has sidelined the 54-year-old candidate 3 months back and his victory came as a huge shock to current party members.

Dhinakaran contested elections against the veteran AIADMK leader E Madhusudanan who garnered barely 48,306 votes in comparison to the winner's 89,013 votes.  The seat of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa went to polls on Thursday with a record 77 percent voter turnout.

Post his victory, TTV Dhinakaran said, "It's a victory for all. This government will not be here for two more months. Two leaves symbol was a victory symbol when it was with amma. But now it's with villains, how can they win."

From the total electorate of 2.28 lakh voters, 1.76 lakh people reportedly cast their votes. Around 100 officials will be involved in the counting process which will take place in 19 rounds.

The RK Nagar seat has been lying vacant since the death of Jayalalithaa in December last year after a previous by-poll was cancelled on allegations of buying of votes. A total of 59 candidates contested for the seat, although the main competition is said to be between the ruling AIADMK, Opposition DMK, and TTV Dhinakaran.

The ruling AIADMK has fielded veteran leader E Madhusudanan who has held the RK Nagar seat in the past as well, while DMK has fielded Marudhu Ganesh, a local considered to be a strong candidate.

The death of Jayalalithaa was followed by a split in the AIADMK party which she had headed, and her aide V K Sasikala was sent to jail in connection with a disproportionate assets case. Although the two factions of AIADMK, led by Chief Minister E Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam later merged, the merger took place on the condition that Sasikala and her nephew TTV Dhinakaran would be evicted from the party.

However, Dhinakaran and Sasikala maintain that they lead the 'real' AIADMK, and winning the RK Nagar seat would be used to consolidate their claims.
