In a historic move, the Lok Sabha last week passed the Triple Talaq Bill criminalising the process of instant 'talaq' or divorce by saying the word 'talaq' thrice. One of the petitioners in the triple talaq case, Ishrat Jahan has now joined the BJP party, the BJP West Bengal unit general secretary confirmed.

Sayantan Basu BJP's West Bengal unit general secretary, confirmed the update to PTI, saying "Ishrat Jahan has joined the BJP at our Howrah office," adding that a state-level programme would soon be organised to felicitate her.

Ishrat was one of the 5 petitioners in the triple talaq case who protested against the practice after her husband divorced her over the phone from Dubai by saying the word 'talaq' thrice.

According to political experts, Ishrat joining the BJP will help the party establish a foothold in West Bengal which is one of the few states remaining without a strong BJP force. With Ishrat joining the BJP, the party would be able to win the votes and trust of Muslim women in both the state as well as the nation, fighting against its reputation as a Hindutva group.

West Bengal has been ruled by TMC, Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Bangla Congress and the Congress party since India achieved independence in 1947 but so far the state has had not a single BJP government.

Passing the triple talaq bill was hailed by Muslim women across the nation who credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government for clearing the controversial bill which faced stiff opposition in the Lok Sabha. However, the bill is yet to be tabled in Rajya Sabha.
