A terrorist and 4 others were killed by security forces on Sunday evening in the Shopian district of south Kashmir as the forces responded to an attack on a mobile vehicle checkpost. From the casualties, the terrorist has been identified as Shahid Ahmad Dar and one victim has been identified as a civilian student.

While the security forces say that the 3 others killed were associates of the terrorist or OGWs meaning Over-Ground Workers or associates in counter-terrorism parlance, locals allege that the 3 victims were civilians killed in army firing.

"The three OGWs/accomplices in the car who were accompanying the terrorist were found to be dead. Police has reached the spot and started legal formalities," a statement from the army said.

According to security forces, the attack took place around 8 pm on Sunday when the vehicle check post manned by army personnel was fired upon by a car they signalled to stop.

Local residents alleged that this was the second time in this year that civilians have been killed in Army firing, and hinted that the incident could spark unrest.

Earlier in January, an army convoy was faced with a stone-pelting mob in the Shopian district of Kashmir as a result of which the army opened fire in self-defence, resulting in the death of 3 civilians. The January incident sparked outrage amongst the locals and the Jammu and Kashmir Police filed an FIR against the Indian Army, resulting in a political row.

The Supreme Court, responding to a plea of the father of the army man accused in the FIR, directed no coercive action to take place against the accused officer, and asked the Jammu and Kashmir government to respond on why an FIR had been filed against an Army officer.
