A 15 year old boy was allegedly thrashed to death in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district over suspicion of mobile theft on Sunday.

According to the police, a group of people thrashed the 15-year-old to death over suspicion of stealing a mobile phone and Rs. 3,000 cash.

While addressing the media, a senior police official said, “Following an investigation, it was found he had been lynched. A case has been registered and action would be taken against the culprits.”

Media reports say that the boy’s mother, a widow, fled the house when the enraged mob came looking for her son. After she returned, the woman found the boy dead with injury marks.

The boy, allegedly in the habit of indulging in small thefts, was fatally beaten up by some people, who suspected him to be behind the theft

A man in the village suspected that the deceased boy was responsible for the alleged theft of his mobile phone and cash. After this a group of men started to beat him.

The Vice President's Perspective

Earlier this month Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu said that people who are involved in lynching cases and hate crimes cannot call themselves nationalists and the legislation is not alone responsible, a change in societal behaviour was required to prevent such cases.

He said, "It is the societal behaviour that has to change..when you kill the other man, how can you call yourself nationalist?"

"On the basis of religion, on the basis of caste or on the basis of colour, or on the basis of gender, you discriminate. Nationalism, ‘Bharat Mata ki jai’ has a wider meaning," he added further.
