One of the 7 Wonders of the World, and synonymous with India at a global level, the great Taj Mahal of Agra has been slighted by the current Yogi Adityanath-led government on several occasions.

Recently the Taj Mahal was excluded from a tourism booklet of UP state, resulting in a protest from the public as well, after which BJP MLA Sangeet Som has spoken out against the Taj Mahal, calling it a "blot on Indian culture" and that it was built by traitors.

"The creator of Taj Mahal (Shahjahan) imprisoned his father. He wanted to wipe out Hindus. If these people are part of our history, then it is very sad and we will change this history," said the firebrand BJP MLA Sangeet Som.

He continued, that the iconic Taj Mahal should have no place in Indian history since it was built by traitors.

Apart from Som's controversial remarks on the Taj Mahal, the sitting BJP MLA from the Sardhana assembly constituency also alleged that the Mohammad Ali Jauhar University was a hub of terrorists.

Som has been known for making communally-charged statements and was earlier booked as well for making inflammatory statements with regard to the Muzaffarnagar riots, although he was later cleared of the charges.

While nobody went so far as to discuss demolition of the Taj Mahal, Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, known for his controversial statements, said that if the Uttar Pradesh government decides to demolish the Taj Mahal he would support the initiative, adding that the issue had been raised some decades back.

Former UP CM and Samajwadi party chief Akhilesh Yadav defended the Taj Mahal saying that it continues to be "an architectural marvel and a much-visited monument that generates employment for a large number of people".
