Sunil Arora Takes Charge As Chief Election Commissioner Today, Replaces OP Rawat

Former bureaucrat Sunil Arora took charge as Chief Election Commissioner on Sunday and replaced OP Rawat, who retired on Saturday.

As the Chief Election Commissioner, Mr Arora will oversee the 2019 general election, besides the Lok Sabha elections.

He will also be responsible for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Maharashtra, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim that are scheduled to be held next year.

A former bureaucrat, Sunil Arora was appointed to the election body in September last year.

Mr Arora, aged 62, had been the Information and Broadcasting Secretary, and Secretary in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.

He has also worked in ministries and departments such as Finance, Textiles and Planning Commission and was also CMD of Indian Airlines for five years.

Back in his home state, Arora was one of the most trusted officers of Vasundhara Raje during her earlier term as Rajasthan Chief Minister. He was her principal secretary from 2005 to 2008.

Arora retired in April 2016, following which he was appointed as an advisor to Prasar Bharti and then as director general & CEO of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs.

Arora takes over the office at a time when the poll panel is in the midst of conducting assembly elections in five states, which are being considered as a semi-final to the 2019 general elections.

In the past, a similar change during elections happened when Navin Chawla took over from N Gopalaswami during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
