Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor was on Saturday granted regular bail by the Patiala House Court in the death case of his wife Sunanda Pushkar.

According to media reports, Magistrate Vishal said, “There is no requirement to file a formal bail as an anticipatory bail had already been granted by the sessions court.”

Public prosecutor and Shashi Tharoor's counsel opposed the applications moved by Subramanian Swamy. Swamy was seeking the court's nod to allow him to assist the prosecution in the case.

The court later posted the matter on July 26 for further proceedings. The Delhi Police’s charge sheet had named Tharoor as an accused in the case. Magistrate Vishal had summoned him following the filing of a charge sheet against him last month.

While summoning the senior Congress leader last month, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal had said, “ I have perused the charge sheet under Section 173 of the Cr.PC and documents filed along with it by the Special Investigation Team. On the basis of the police report, I take cognizance of the offense of abetment of suicide under Section 306 of the IPC of late Ms. Sunanda Pushkar and of committing cruelty upon her, punishable under Section 498A of the IPC, by Dr. Shashi Tharoor,"
