After the thumping success of Prime Minister’s call for LPG subsidy forego, the Railway department is also looking forward to giving the people a similar choice.

According to a Times of India report, the government is looking to let the people ‘voluntarily forego the subsidy on tickets’. TOI quoted a source saying, ‘railway will offer two slabs of subsidy surrender- 50 percent and 100 percent of the subsidy amount.’

The subsidies provided to the public take a huge toll on the department’s revenue. According to data, the Indian Railway only recovers 57 percent of the total cost of travel. The department has also started printing the real cost of travel on the tickets to inform the general public of the truth.

This comes days after a man sent a cheque of Rs 950, equal to the amount of subsidy on his ticket, to the department’s subsidiary IRCTC. He decided to send the cheque after he saw the message on his ticket reading, ‘43 percent subsidy borne by the Railway during this train journey’.

Along with the cheque, he also sent a letter addressed to the Railway Minister stating he will never avail such financial benefits in the future.

Although the government has already given the senior citizens an option to give up their concessions, the department’s senior officials say that there is no provision to accept such cheques, therefore they will have to return it.

Modi government is already running a plan where people can voluntarily give up their LPG subsidies.
