In a shocking incident that proves that many times the rapist is known to the victim, an 8-month-old baby girl was raped by her 27-year-old cousin in the Shakurbasti locality of northwest Delhi on Sunday. The girl's condition is said to be critical an is on life support after undergoing an operation.

The parents of the girl left her at the home of the father's elder brother so that they could go to work. When the mother returned she found the 8-month old in a blood-soaked bed with her clothes also covered in blood. Upon questioning the sister-in-law made excuses so the girl was taken to a doctor who confirmed rape, admitting her to the hospital with serious injuries and performed a 3-hour operation on her.

The father of the victim described the incident to media, "I had left for work leaving my children at home. My wife works too. So she too left for work soon after. When she came back, she saw blood-soaked bed & clothes of the child. When she told this to her sister-in-law she made excuses. My child is in critical condition now."

The rapist was identified as 27-year-old Suraj, the victim's first cousin who lived in the house where she was kept while her parents were at work.

''Accused Suraj, who is a cousin of the child, took her to the other part of the building on the pretext of playing with her and sexually assaulted her," said a senior Delhi police official.

"When her mother, who works as a maid in the area, returned home, she found her daughter unconscious lying in a pool of blood. She informed her husband, who is a manual labourer. They took her to a hospital and informed the police," he said.

"During the investigation, Suraj turned out to be the prime suspect. After he was grilled, he fled the home. This confirmed their suspicion of his involvement in the crime. He was later traced and arrested," he added.

"Now, Suraj has confessed his crime. A case has been registered against Suraj under the provisions of POSCO," the officer said.

Swati Maliwal, Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women expressed shock over the incident in a tweet, saying, "What to do? How can Delhi sleep today when 8-month baby has been brutally raped in Capital? Have we become so insensitive or we have simply accepted this as our fate? Where is the sena which attacked a school bus to 'protect honour'? No one to ask questions from the system now?"
