Congress leader Sushilkumar Shinde in his “election speech” compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to German dictator Adolf Hitler and accused him of trying to "strangulate" the rights of the opposition, a day after Congressmen were allegedly thrashed by police in Solapur during PM’s visit to the city.

"Does he (Modi) listen to anyone? This is what is called Hitlerism," he charged.

As per the media reports, the Maharashtra Police had allegedly assaulted Congress workers and party’s youth and student wing activists, when they tried to protest against PM Modi's visit to Solapur who was there to launch multiple developmental projects.

"The BJP government, particularly the prime minister, tried to strangulate the rights of the opposition to stage protest in a democracy," he told reporters here.

Shinde alleged the prime minister launched and sought credit for projects which were envisaged during the previous Congress government.

"This means they have nothing to show or offer," he added.

Shinde during his tenure as the Union Home Minister in January 2013 accused the BJP and the RSS of conducting "terror training" camps to spread "saffron terrorism" in the country.

Shinde, however, had later said that his comments were misunderstood and that he had no intention to link terrorism with any religion or political organizations.

PM Modi had kickstarted the Bharatiya Janata Party's 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign from Solapur on January 9.
