Senior Congress Leader Shantaram Naik Dies Of Heart Attack At 72

Former President of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Shantaram Naik passed away on Saturday morning. He was 72 years old. As per reports, Naik suffered a major heart attack and breathed his last while being taken to Trimurti Hospital in Goa.

Naik represented Goa in Rajya Sabha for two terms. He served as the President of the Goa unit of Congress party from July 2017 till March 2018. As a Member of Parliament in the 8th Loksabha, Naik played an active role in the demand for statehood for Goa.

He is survived by his wife Beena and son Archit. His final rites will be performed at his Cuncolim residence at 11 am tomorrow.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi and a host of leaders across party lines paid their condolences on the demise of Mr Naik. Gandhi tweeted, “I’m sorry to hear about the passing away of Shri Shantaram Naik, former Goa Congress Chief, MP and senior Congress leader, who played an important role in the battle for Goa’s statehood. My condolences to his family in their time of grief. May his soul rest in peace.”

Aam Aadmi Party Goa Convener Elvis Gomes tweeted, “AAP Goa condoles the sudden passing away of Shantaram Naik former MP and Congress leader. He remained a loyal soldier of the congress till the end. Naik’s contribution to the cause of Goa, konkani & secularism will always be remembered.”

Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu tweeted, “I convey my heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of Shri Shantaram Naik, former Member of Parliament from Goa and former Goa Congress President. He was one of the most active MPs and made good contribution to parliamentary debates. I pray for his eternal peace.”
