Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar on Monday criticised Narasimha Rao-led government in 1992 while speaking on the issue of Ram Mandir at 'Ek Shaam Babri Masjid Ke Naam' programme organised by Social Democratic Party of India in New Delhi.
During the address, Aiyar quoted Narasimha Rao-led government in 1992 failed to prevent the demolition of Babri Masjid and did not take the steps that were needed to be taken.
He said demolition of Babri Masjid was the failure of Congress party and downfall of this country too.
Aiyar said that no excuse could ever justify as to why this "unconstitutional activity" was not stopped.
"I'm from the Congress and we did a mistake, then Prime Minister Narasimha Rao did not take steps that should have been taken," he added.
The Congress leader further said "I am not ready to believe any excuse given to as to why this act was not stopped. We should have stopped it as it was an attempt to partition India again. It was an attempt to break the ties between Hindus and Muslims which is the core foundation of this country. Our national integrity was targeted on that day."
Earlier he also said, that it was former PM Rao's "pro-Hindu mindset" which encouraged the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in 1992.
During 'Ek Shaam Babri Masjid Ke Naam' programme, Aiyar said the destruction of Babri Masjid was the second attempt to divide India. “Hindu-Muslim unity was torn apart when the Babri Masjid was demolished.”
Talking about the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, Aiyar said those who want a mandir can make one but “how can they say ‘mandir wahin banayenge’.”
“King Dasharatha had many rooms in his house. The legend says there were 1,000 rooms in his palace. How are they sure that Lord Ram was born where ”Aiyar said.
The Congress leader, who has courted many controversies in the past, said that today it has become the trend to question the integrity of Muslims.
Showing his concern towards the Muslim community Aiyar said “You are those who proved your loyalty to this nation when you decided to stay back during Partition. Questioning you and doubting you mean questioning the integrity of this country, questioning the Constitution.”
Questioning BJP's governance he said"Those who were behind the demolition are not supported by the people of this country.
"In 2014, General election, around 31 per cent of Indians extended their support to them but that too for different reasons. In 2014, they got an opportunity but they completely ruined it in the last five years. I know that Indian people want to be secular," he added.
Aiyar also stated that “BJP is trying to destroy the foundation of this Constitution and you should make sure that doesn't happen. I am a Hindu and I support you.”
