Jammu and Kashmir again mired in blood after a fierce gunfight between security forces and militants. Three militants have been killed in an ongoing encounter which broke out early Tuesday morning in South Kashmir’s Shopian district after security forces launched a pre-dawn anti-terror operation.

Army officials have confirmed the killing of three militants. “The operation is under progress,” said an official.

According to sources, around 4-6 terrorists are believed to be holed up in Shopian’s Zainapora area and forces are engaging them in a fierce gunbattle. Security forces were conducting a regular combing operation when the terrorists started firing.

On Monday, terrorists opened fire at security forces in Budgam and two of them were killed in retaliatory firing.

The attack comes just days ahead of India’s 70th Republic Day celebrations. A top Hizbul Mujahideen commander is believed to be among the terrorists.

According to media reports, the brother of an Indian Police Service officer is among the three terrorists killed.

Pakistani military on Sunday once again violated ceasefire and resorted to unprovoked fired at Indian forces in Kathua and Rajouri districts of Jammu and Kashmir along the International Border and Line of Control. However, there were no casualties in the crossfire.

An official said, "Jammu and Kashmir were rocked by three grenade attacks on January 18. The first grenade attack was reported from Srinagar’s Lal Chowk, the second attack took place in Gagran area of South Kashmir’s Shopian and the third attack was carried out at a police station in Pulwama."

"Though no loss of life or injuries was reported in the attack on a CRPF bunker located at Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) in Lal Chowk area, the CRPF bunker, as well as some shops and cars, were damaged in the attack as the grenade exploded on the roadside," the official added.

"The operation was planned by the police based on a piece of specific information about a hideout in the orchards of Sheermal,'' said the police chief of Jammu and Kashmir, Dilbag Singh.
