The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a contempt notice to Delhi Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) chief Manoj Tiwari in connection with breaking seal of locked houses in Gokalpur.

The houses were sealed by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) for running dairy facility illegally. The apex court has asked Tiwari to appear before it on September 25 to brief his stand.

Tiwari had visited Gokalpur on September 16 and broke the locks of sealed houses. After Tiwari's alleged illegal action of breaking locks without the prior approval, EDMC filed a complaint against him for tampering with the seal of houses.

Based on the EDMC complaint, a case under IPC Section 188 and relevant provisions of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act has been registered against Tiwari.

The Supreme Court said,  “It’s important that elected members should not defy the order of this court."

The Court also asks why the process of contempt of court should not be initiated against him for allegedly violating the Supreme Court's order with respect to sealing.

While Tiwari was breaking the locks he was asked by a local that why he is breaking the law.

Tiwari was quoted by the Indian Express as saying, "There were people living there, and the officials sealed it on the pretext of a dairy being run there."
