SC Holds Policy Decisions Of Interim CBI Director Rao, Appoints Former Judge AK Patnaik For Supervision

The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Central Vigilance Commission to complete the enquiry initiated against CBI Director Alok Verma. The bench also ruled that the inquiry would be supervised by Former SC Judge AK Patnaik.

A three-judge bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and also comprising of Justice SK Kaul and Justice KM Joseph also ruled that till the time the inquiry is not completed, the interim director M Nageshwar Rao cannot take any policy decisions.

The Bench also directed that all decisions are taken by M Nageshwar Rao from October 23 to be submitted in a sealed cover to the Supreme Court. CJI Gogoi also observed that at the present stage, the inquiry would only be held to find out whether there is a prima facie case.

Senior Advocate Fali Nariman appeared for Alok Verma, while Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi represented Rakesh Asthana. Attorney General for India KK Venugopal and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared for the Centre/CBI.

The bench was hearing a petition filed by Alok Verma and a PIL filed by NGO Common Cause against the orders of CVC and Central Government divesting Verma of the powers of CBI Director. Senior Advocate Fali S Nariman appeared for Alok Verma.
