RJD's Tejashwi Yadav Calls For Nationwide Strike Today Over Muzaffarpur Shelter Home Rapes

Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of Opposition in Bihar and son of RJD chief Lalu Yadav has called for a nationwide strike on Friday, demanding the resignation of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the alleged mass sexual exploitation at various shelter homes in the state.

"RJD will hold a strike in Bihar and across the country, including at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, on August 4 to seek answers from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Muzaffarpur shelter home case and several other crimes in the state," Tejashwi said to ANI.

A social audit by Mumbai’s Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) of shelter homes running across the state of Bihar alleged sexual assault of inmates, after which the Bihar Police found that 34 girls out of 42 shelter home inmates in Muzaffarpur had been sexually exploited.

More than More than 10 people, including all staff members of the shelter home and some government officials, have so far been arrested while the Nitish Kumar government has ordered an enquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Tejashwi Yadav criticised the Bihar government of shielding the accused after a photo surfaced which showed the owner of the Muzaffarpur shelter Brajesh Thakur being felicitated by Nitish Kumar.

"Photos of top leaders honoring the accused (Brijesh Thakur) corroborate that several senior leaders are involved in this case and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is trying to shield them. Probe was delayed deliberately to manipulate evidence," Tejashwi Yadav said.

The call for strike comes after Left Parties and groups in Bihar called for a state-wide bandh in Patna on Thursday over the Muzaffarpur shelter home scandal. Protesters were spotted blocking railway tracks and roads around Patna on Thursday.

The Supreme Court on Thursday took suo moto cognizance of the Muzaffarpur shelter home case with the Bench comprising Justice MB Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta issuing a notice to the Nitish Kumar-led state government and also to the Ministry of Women and Child Development. 

The apex court bench also expressed concerns over the media coverage of the Muzaffarpur case.

“It has been repeatedly said by this Court that a victim of a sexual offence should not be made to relive the trauma of the incident. In this case, the victims were made to go through it again and again,” the bench said.
