In the Rewari gang rape case of a 19-year-old student, a former CBSE topper, the victim's mother on Sunday returned the amount of Rs 2 lakh given as compensation under the Haryana Victim Compensation Scheme, 2013.

Earlier on Sunday, the mother said, “Some officials came yesterday to give me a compensation cheque. I am returning it today, as we want justice and not money.”

After the mother's statement, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) was able to arrest 1 person in connection with the crime. The Haryana police had released photos of the three accused that were identified as Manish, Nishu and Pankaj on Saturday.

"We are working on every minute on the input that we have received. We have some corroborative inputs that can help us in moving in the right direction. Investigation is underway," Shrikant Jadhav, ADG said.

The search operation to nab the accused is underway with Rajesh Duggal Rewari Superintendent of Police (SP) being transferred, replaced by Rahul Sharma as the new SP of Rewari.

Commenting on the heinous crime in the state, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said, “3 accused have been identified. It's unfortunate they (accused-victim) knew each other. It's even more unfortunate that one accused is Army personnel. Search is underway. We've announced a reward of Rs 1 Lakh on their head. They'll be nabbed soon.”

The student was abducted from the bus stop on her way to coaching classes on September 12. The accused took her in the car and gang-raped her.

After committing the crime, the accused came back to the spot from where they had picked her and dumped her in an unconscious condition. She is currently undergoing medical treatment at a hospital in Rewari.
