In relief for Karti Chidambaram, son of former union finance minister P Chidambaram, the Delhi High Court on Friday said that he could not be arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in the INX Media money laundering case in which he is accused till March 20, the next date of hearing.

Karti was arrested by the CBI on February 28 on charges that he used the influence of his father, then the Union Finance Minister, to facilitate foreign investment approvals for the INX Media group in 2007 and 2008 in exchange for financial aid.

According to INX Media co-owners Indrani and Peter Mukerjea, currently involved in the murder case of Indrani's daughter Sheena Bora, they paid Karti Chidambaram $7 lakh to secure the foreign investment clearance.

As Karti's CBI custody came to an end on Friday, the CBI sought a further remand for 6 more days, however, the Supreme Court transferred the case to the Delhi High Court which granted relief to the 46-year-old businessman.

Karti Chidambaram's lawyer and former minister Salman Khurshid said that they sought the Supreme Court and now the High Court to cancel the summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate as they anticipated "sequential arrests".

Khurshid explained, "What we did in the Supreme Court was to anticipate sequential arrests, that when you get bail in one matter, then you are picked up in another matter... We wanted that to be clear... because the law doesn't allow that to be done."

Meanwhile, the Congress has alleged that the probe into Karti Chidambaram is a 'divisionary tactic' to take the glare away from absconder Nirav Modi and the multi-crore Punjab National Bank scam, and that the government is carrying a vendetta against Congress leaders and their relatives.
