Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra on Saturday recommended the name of Justice Ranjan Gogi, to be his successor as Misra’s term as the Chief is near to its conclusion.

Justice Gogoi is one of the four judges who held a press conference against CJI Dipak Misra in January this year.

In the press conference, Justice Gogoi, along with Justices J Chelameswar (since retired), MB Lokur and Kurian Joseph — had said that the situation in the top court was "not in order" and many "less than desirable" things have taken place.

According to the convention, the senior most judge of the Supreme Court is appointed the CJI, and Justice Gogoi by virtue of his seniority is next in line. Chief Justice Dipak Misra will retire on October 2 and as per the court’s convention, the outgoing CJI has to send his recommendation around a month before the end of his tenure.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi has been an important part of some crucial judgment of the apex court. Justice Gogoi has headed the Supreme Court bench that is monitoring the National Registrar of Citizen (NRC) which is being carried out to identify the Bangladeshi refugees residing in the Indian territory illegally.

Gogoi’s Vision

While delivering a speech in July, Justice Ranjan Gogoi had said, “a revolution, not reform is needed to keep the institution of judiciary serviceable for common people, asserting that the judiciary would have to be more "pro-active" and on the "front foot.”

The judge had told that the judiciary was the "last bastion of hope" and has been "a proud guardian of the great constitutional vision".
