Rajya Sabha Adjourned Amidst furore As Govt Refuses To Refer Triple Talaq Bill To Select Committee

The upper house of the Parliament was adjourned till 11 am tomorrow following protests from the opposition against the Government’s refusal to refer the Triple Talaq Bill to a select committee. The bill has already been cleared in the Loksabha. The bill nullifies instant triple talaq and makes it a criminal offense.

Several opposition parties including the Congress, the Left AIADMK and the DMK, have been demanding that the bill be referred to a select committee for review. The government lacks majority in Rajya Sabha and would need to build consensus in order to get the bill passed and made into law.

Just after the Triple Talaq Bill was tabled by Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Congress leader Anand Sharma moved the notice stating that the Triple Talaq Bill be referred to a select committee of Rajya Sabha. He also proposed the names of the committee members, none of which were from the BJP.

Union Finance Minister and leader of the House Arun Jaitley accused the Congress Party of contravening parliamentary procedure by moving the motion without submitting it 24 hours in advance. He added that the bill should not be referred to a select committee as two Supreme Court judges held the practice of instant divorce as unfair and used their extraordinary power to suspend it for six months that expires on 22 February.

“There is an urgency that the country expects from Parliament, legislature must act with sense of responsibility,” Jaitley said.

Responding to Jaitley Congress leader kapil Sibal said, “He referred to judgement of SC, I want to correct the record because I appeared in the case on behalf of Muslim Personal Law Board. What he said was in context of the minority judgement”.

After continued pandemonium the house was adjourned till 11 am tomorrow.
